History of the municipality of Großraming
Großraming in Ennstal looks back on a long history that is closely linked to forests, iron and the River Enns. The first dense settlements were established between 1200 and 1300. The village originally belonged to the Duchy of Bavaria and became part of Austria in the 12th century; since 1490 it has been part of the Principality of Austria ob der Enns.
The region was part of the historic Eisenwurzen. For centuries, the life of the people was characterised by the small iron industry, timber extraction and rafting. Iron from the Styrian Erzberg was processed in mills, wood was used as fuel and timber and rafted on the Enns as far as Vienna.
Großraming developed as a church early on: the first wooden church was built around 1200 and the village became its own parish in 1392. Today's parish church dates back to a Gothic building from 1513 and was later extended in Baroque style.
An important development was the construction of the Crown Prince Rudolf railway in 1869, which opened up the Enns Valley in terms of transport and opened up new economic prospects.
Großraming has been part of the province of Upper Austria since 1918. After 1945, the municipality continued to develop as a residential and commuter town with modern infrastructure. Today, Großraming combines its historical character of iron, wood and river landscape with nature and leisure activities in the Enns Valley.
