History of Micheldorf
Between castle walls and the sound of scythes
Micheldorf im Kremstal in the heart of Upper Austria can look back on over 4000 years of settlement history. The area was already inhabited in the Neolithic Age, as evidenced by finds on the Georgenberg and in the Krems area. In Celtic times, there was a refuge with a temple here, later the Romans took advantage of the strategic location on the important route over the Pyhrn Pass and left behind traces of a watchtower and a Roman road.
In the 11th century, Altpernstein Castle was built, which still towers as a landmark over the Kremstal micheldorf.at. From the 16th century onwards, Micheldorf developed into an important centre of the scythe industry. Along the Krems, scythe smiths utilised the water power; their guild achieved supra-regional fame and had a lasting impact on the economy and landscape.
Micheldorf was elevated to a market town in 1996 and to this day combines early traces of settlement, medieval fortification and living craftsmanship to create a history that remains alive in the townscape and in the scythe smith museum.
