History of Weyer
Between Enns, the foothills of the Alps and living history
Weyer looks back on a long history that is closely linked to the Enns Valley and the development of the province of Upper Austria. The name of the village is presumably derived from a "pond"; Weyer is mentioned in a Latin document as early as 1259 as "ad Piscinam", and the German form "Weyer" appears for the first time in 1371.
Geographically, the village was located on an important transport axis along the River Enns. As early as the Middle Ages, Weyer benefited from its location in the transitional area between present-day Upper Austria and Styria. Politically, the area initially belonged to the eastern part of the Duchy of Bavaria and, from the 12th century, to the Duchy of Austria; from 1490 it was included in the Principality of Austria ob der Enns.
Weyer developed into a market town early on. Trade, crafts and above all the iron industry formed the economic basis. The Enns Valley was part of the historic Eisenwurzen, a region where ore, wood and water power provided ideal conditions for hammer mills and iron processing companies. Raw materials and finished goods were transported along the Enns, with rafting playing a central role. This combination of river, crafts and trade characterised the town for centuries.
Hard times are also part of the history. During the Second World War, the Diepoldsau camp, a satellite camp of the Mauthausen concentration camp, existed in the municipality from July 1943 to 29 August 1944; around 130 prisoners had to perform forced labour in the construction of an Enns dam. In spring 1945, death marches led through the Enns Valley, during which many people lost their lives. Two memorials commemorate these events today.
Today, Weyer is a market town in the district of Steyr-Land with around 3,995 inhabitants. The history of the town - from the medieval market to the ironworks to the modern municipality - can still be felt in the townscape, in museums and in the collective memory.

The trail leads through peaceful mixed forest, over the Gasselsgraben and along the Gaflenzbach stream back to the village centre. Ideal for half a day on the move - also suitable as a running route. Official description with map & elevation profile
