Reichraming is located where the Enns Valley becomes quieter and the Kalkalpen National Park begins. A place that has always been characterised by the forest - and by the power of water. Mountain and forest landscapes dominate the scenery, criss-crossed by clear streams that make their way down into the valley.
Gorges, old paths, former hermitages and the lumberjack museum tell of the region's wealth of timber and the life of the lumberjacks. Where once the forest railway brought the felled timber to the Enns, today cycle paths on the historic route lead through cool tunnels and along striking rock faces deep into the Reichraminger Hintergebirge.
Hiking trails open up access to the sea of forests in the Kalkalpen National Park. In the UNESCO World Heritage Old Beech Forests you realise step by step how close wilderness and unspoilt nature are to each other here. History of Reichraming
Reichraming in Ennstal has a long history dating back to the Stone Age . Finds of stone tools and bones prove that the area around today's Arzberg district was settled very early on. The name "Reichraming" refers to Slavic settlements, which probably originated in the 6th or 7th century; Bavarian colonisation followed later.
In the Middle Ages, Reichraming developed into an important centre for iron processing. Hammer mills utilised the water power of the Reichramingbach stream, and in the 15th century numerous master nail smiths worked in the region. The mining of iron ore on the Schieferstein and agriculture also characterised people's lives.
Forestry played a central role for centuries. The wood from the Reichraminger Hintergebirge was initially transported via the timber drift , later - from the 1930s - via the forest railway, which was in operation until 1971. After the decline of the metal industry, the village increasingly changed. With the establishment of the Kalkalpen National Park in 1997, Reichraming finally became the "gateway" to a protected natural landscape and today combines history, forest culture and gentle tourism
