ABOUT THE EXHIBITION 

With “A LABORATORY OF PAINTING,” Steyr-born artist Reinhold Rebhandl breaks new ground. The exhibition will evolve and change over the course of three weeks. Rebhandl works on site, effectively transforming the Schlossgalerie Steyr into his temporary studio. Large paintings hang or lean against the walls, structuring the walls alongside smaller works mounted on large panels and framing the room installation “Atelier.”

Rebhandl focuses on works from recent years, allowing the loss and damage of a large portion of his works eleven years ago to resonate only subtly.

Visitors can follow the artist’s journey and, through conversation, discover new ways of engaging with his work.

Rebhandl’s central theme is painting. He works with and on colors and non-colors, reflecting on their symbolism and shifting meanings; he plays with the painting surface, creates contrasts, and integrates words and texts.

The results of his process-oriented approach are unconventional, full of irony, and—precisely because of their connection to the history and present of art and society—refreshingly new and relevant.

ABOUT THE ARTIST 

Reinhold Rebhandl, born in Steyr in 1957, pursues a consistent, independent, and quasi-solitary path with his art, and for this very reason ranks among the most exciting artistic voices waiting to be discovered.

Consistency and “incorruptibility (© Robert Pfaller)” with regard to his own quality criteria for what constitutes “good images” characterize his artistic practice. Rebhandl’s work is created in silence; he pays no heed to fashions and trends or to the art market, but rather develops his work within a complex system of form and color, which he continually expands with new, personally filtered impressions drawn from the media, history, and society. His conceptual painting can also be understood as a commentary on modernism and postmodernism, just as he repeatedly draws on his own earlier concepts in his creative process and recontextualizes them within his work.
