The work was first performed in Paris in 1869. The instrumentation is in the style of chamber music. Five soloists and a four-part choir are accompanied by strings, harp, and organ. This lyrical reflection on the Christmas story surrounding the birth of Jesus Christ is carried by the clear, elegant melodies and charming harmonies characteristic of French Romantic music.
The Spital Choir and Orchestra will perform this work on Sunday, December 20, 2026, at 4:00 p.m. in the collegiate church of Spital am Pyhrn.
Admission: Advance tickets: 18 € (parish office, Café-Konditorei Kemetmüller, Spital village store, and from choir members) At the door: 20 € Free for children.
