Burgberg in Losenstein

Losenstein, Oberösterreich, Österreich

In the middle of the village of Losenstein, the 420-metre-high Burgberg with its striking ruins towers above the Enns River. Beyond the romance of knights and historic walls, the rugged mountain with its gorge forests and surrounding meadows is a valuable natural area that is protected.

Rocky and partly quite steep, the elevation with the old castle at its peak is prominent. A 20-meter high rock face is also popular with climbers for their sport. Rarely found, natural gorge forests dominate the landscape. To the north, ashes and mountain maples prevail, while to the south, the heat-loving summer linden, field maple, and mountain ash can be found. Since the forests on the castle hill are hardly used for economic purposes, they present themselves very naturally to the observer with a high proportion of dead and old wood. To the south, facing the Enns, there are also valuable, unused meadow areas where rare plants are increasingly finding a valuable habitat.
