Traditional runs, Niglo parade & alpine customs

When dusk falls and the ringing of bells rings through the alleyways, old customs come to life in 360° Alpenland. Perchten and Krampus processions are as much a part of Advent here as mulled cider and the Christkindl - powerful, respectful and deeply rooted in the region.

Artfully carved masks and impressive figures with heavy furs and bells parade through the villages. A special highlight is the historic Niglo parade in Windischgarsten on 5 December - a 150-year-old tradition and intangible cultural heritage as defined by UNESCO.

Historic Niglou parade in Windischgarsten

During the historic Niglo parade in Windischgarsten, old verses such as "Da rennt da Leutzammfresser um...", which were passed down by Rudolf Kusché in the 1950s, can still be heard today. The custom was first mentioned as early as 1860 and takes place every year on 5 December at around 5.30 pm through the village, which is transformed into a living stage.

Over 30 figures appear in historical masks and costumes - including Nigloherr, Niglofrau, Klaubauf, Trud, Habergoaß, Leutzammfresser, Engerl and other traditional figures. However, the focus is not on the scary, but on the good: St Nicholas, who brings light and peace. Since 2012, the Niglo parade has been part of Austria's intangible UNESCO cultural heritage and is one of the most impressive living traditions in the 360° Alpine region.

Frequently asked questions about Perchten & Krampus in 360° Alpenland:

Perchten and Krampus are figures from Alpine folklore in Upper Austria. Whilst the Krampus appears as St Nicholas’s companion, the Perchten symbolise the driving away of winter and ancient spirits. In 360° Alpenland, they are an expression of living tradition and regional identity.

Most Krampus parades take place around 5 and 6 December. Perchten parades often follow between the start of Advent and the Raunächte in January. Dates vary depending on the location within the 360° Alpenland region. You can find the latest information on our website.

Organised runs take place in many towns and villages between Pyhrn-Priel, Steyr, Kirchdorf an der Krems and Bad Hall. The Perchten runs in Steinbach an der Steyr are particularly atmospheric. This tradition is deeply rooted, especially in smaller towns, and is kept alive by local clubs. The dates are often announced at short notice.

Perchten symbolise the transition from darkness to light. Their masks and costumes tell of the forces of nature, ancient myths and respect for the seasons – themes that are still very much alive in the heart of Upper Austria today.

The groups make their way through the town in an organised manner, accompanied by music, bells and fire baskets. Social distancing and clear procedures ensure that the experience remains respectful and orderly.

The loud bells are meant to symbolically drive out winter and ward off evil spirits. Their sound echoes through the streets and squares – an auditory sign of change and a new beginning.
