Industrial Hall (City Theatre)
For years, there was discussion about the project of an industrial hall, which was to impressively represent the significance of the Steyr work. On May 28, 1898, the stately building was inaugurated as the "Kaiser-Franz-Joseph-Industrial and Trade Exhibition Hall." In 1924, the hall was converted into a public cinema and concert hall with 900 seats and opened on April 13, 1924. Following a municipal council resolution on April 27, 1951, the hall and foyer were remodeled over a three-month period based on plans by architect Piffl and were handed over on September 7, 1951. In 1955, a Cinemascope screen was installed.
After the old city theatre on Berggasse had become outdated and inaccessible, a modern stage building was constructed adjacent to the industrial hall after the old stage section was demolished in 1957/1958. The building, designed by architect Karl Tobisch-Labotyn and constructed using the fill construction method, contained, at the time of its construction, the most modern stage technology apparatus in Upper Austria. The revolving stage has a diameter of over 11 m. Puccini's "La Boheme," performed by the Linz State Theatre, inaugurated the new city theatre on September 27, 1958.
