Facts & Figures ------------------- 3,373 Inhabitants 39 km² area 377 m above sea level 48.02, 14.42 GPS coordinates History of the municipality of St. Ulrich bei Steyr --------------------------------------------------- ### Ortisei combines past and present **St. Ulrich bei Steyr** carries its history quietly - and yet noticeably in every bend in the road, around the church, on the edge of the forest above the town. Its roots go back a long way. The area was originally located in the eastern part of the Duchy of Bavaria and became part of the Duchy of Austria in the 12th century. From 1490, the area belonged to the Principality of Austria ob der Enns - the historical centre of today's Upper Austria. A small settlement formed around the parish church early on. The choir of the church was consecrated in 1493 and the nave was completed in 1518. For a long time, St. Ulrich was a parish hamlet - few farms, lots of forest, wide fields and a view across to Steyr. The reforms of 1848/49 initially created the independent local communities of Jägerberg, Unterwald and Kleinraming. In 1857, they were united to form the new municipality of St. Ulrich - a decisive step towards today's structure. In 1912, the village was given the suffix "near Steyr", thereby consciously recognising its proximity to the town. The municipality has belonged to the province of Upper Austria since 1918. The 20th century brought changes: Shifting borders, political upheavals, the National Socialist era and the regaining of independence in 1942. After 1945, St. Ulrich remained an independent municipality in the district of Steyr-Land. The industrialisation of the town of Steyr also had an impact here in the following decades - yet the village retained its rural character between mixed forests, fields and rolling hills. A formative chapter began in the 1970s. In 1976, the idea of a "Monument to the Peace of the Youth of the World" was born and unveiled in 1977. In 1982, St. Ulrich bei Steyr declared itself the "1st peace community in the world" and officially anchored this stance in the municipal constitution. Since then, Peace Sunday, international meetings and the Thaddäus Steinmayr Peace Trail have characterised the town's self-image.
