Facts & Figures ------------------- 2,941 Inhabitants 18 km² area 478 m above sea level 47.94, 14.12 GPS coordinates History of the municipality of Schlierbach ------------------------------------------ Schlierbach in Upper Austria's Kremstal valley is a historically evolved municipality whose development is closely linked to the abbey of the same name and its location in the upper Kremstal valley schlierbach.de. Today, Schlierbach belongs to the district of Kirchdorf an der Krems and is best known for its Cistercian monastery with its baroque church and cheese dairy. The settlement of the Krems Valley goes back a long way. The area was already home to various cultures in prehistoric times; Bavarian-Franconian colonisation began in the early Middle Ages schlierbach.de. Schlierbach was first mentioned in a document in 927, when the area was under the influence of the Duchy of Bavaria and the Salzburg Church. This meant that the village was already established as a settlement and ecclesiastical centre in the High Middle Ages. The monastery was decisive for further development. After many eventful centuries, today's Cistercian monastery of Schlierbach emerged from a medieval convent. After being destroyed in the Turkish and religious wars, the monastery was revitalised in the 17th century and largely rebuilt in the Baroque period. The collegiate church is one of the most ornate Baroque churches in Austria and still characterises the townscape today. For centuries, economic and social life was dominated by the monastery - agriculture, crafts and education were closely linked to schlierbach Abbey. In the 19th and 20th centuries, Schlierbach gradually changed from a monastic manorial and parish settlement to a modern rural community. Improved transport links in the Krems Valley strengthened the connection, while at the same time the rural structure with its villages and farms was preserved schlierbach.de. The National Socialist era also left its mark here; an unknown victim of the death marches of 1945 is documented in the local cemetery. After 1945, Schlierbach continued to develop into a spiritual, cultural and tourist centre. The abbey cheese dairy in particular - Austria's first show dairy - made the village famous beyond the region. Today, the community combines its monastic tradition with modern infrastructure and a lively community. Schlierbach is thus exemplary of an Upper Austrian monastic community in which history, faith and regional identity continue to have an impact to the present day.
