Starting around 1850, there were two traveling nativity scenes in the Steyr area, featuring numerous figures that were used in theatrical performances at inns. These two nativity scenes likely merged later to form the Steyr Kripperl. Religious scenes are depicted on the lower stage, which features the stable in Bethlehem. The middle stage houses the stalls of artisans and merchants.
