**Description:**
The bike path leads on the former Waldbahn track into the Hintergebirge of Reichraming, the heart of the Kalkalpen National Park. The loop covers 46 adventurous kilometers with an elevation difference of 522 meters. From the Anzenbach parking lot to the managed Klaushütte, the route is also suitable for families with children due to gentle inclines!
From the Klaushütte, the cycling route runs along the Große Bach to the Annerlsteg and to Weißwasser. Here, 23 kilometers are done. Many bikers turn back here to enjoy the return ride along the green and pristine streams once more. However, those who want to complete the circular route via Brunnbach need some stamina. On nearly 5 kilometers, 200 meters of elevation must be overcome to the Hirschkogel saddle. From there, it’s a long downhill ride to Brunnbach and then following the Plaißabach back to Maieralm, where the loop closes. The familiar path then leads back to the starting point.
**Directions:**
Starting from the [ **train station in Reichraming**](https://www.kalkalpen.at/ausflugsziele#area=*&filter=r-fullyTranslatedLangus-,r-openState-,sb-sortedBy-0&ipd=10396748&wt=E-Bike%20Verleih%20Reichraming,%20E-Mobility%20(E-Bike-Verleih,%20Reichraming,%20Ober%C3%B6sterreich,%20%C3%96sterreich)&zc=13.,14.45706,47.88895), we cycle into the town center of Reichraming. Then we follow the Reichramingbach along Anzenbachstraße to the Anzenbach parking lot. Here, the route separates from the public road, turning right onto Waldbahnstraße into the Hintergebirge. Without noticeable incline, we cycle to the **[Maieralm junction](https://www.kalkalpen.at/ausflugsziele#area=*&filter=r-fullyTranslatedLangus-,r-openState-,sb-sortedBy-0&ipd=809183267&q=mairalm&zc=11.,14.28017,47.79009)**. WARNING! Don’t be deceived by the stream course. **We cross the Plaißabach and then follow the Große Bach on the right.**
After about 1 1/4 hours of cycling (and approximately 14.5 kilometers from Reichraming train station), we arrive at what was once the most important log driving construction in the Hintergebirge. The **[Große Klause](https://www.kalkalpen.at/ausflugsziele#area=*&filter=r-fullyTranslatedLangus-,r-openState-,sb-sortedBy-0&ipd=10192920&q=gro%C3%9Fe%20klause&zc=11.,14.27879,47.79009)** is the oldest log sluice in the Hintergebirge. For the 11.6-kilometer log drive route to the Schallauer-Rechen in Reichraming, the wood took one hour from here.
Just a few meters away is the managed [**KLAUSHÜTTE**](https://www.kalkalpen.at/ausflugsziele#area=*&filter=r-fullyTranslatedLangus-,r-openState-,sb-sortedBy-0&ipd=10192221&q=klaush%C3%BCtte&zc=11.,14.28051,47.79009). Built in 1758, it served as accommodation for timber workers. Today it is a National Park service station for thirsty and hungry cyclists and hikers. The Klaushütte is open from May 1 to mid-October (weather permitting), Wednesday to Sunday and on public holidays from 9 am to 7 pm.
We cycle along the Große Bach between Bärenmauer and Teufelsgraben, past the Keixen, until we reach the entrance to the Große Schlucht. At the Annerlsteg, there is a small shelter with a table and benches, inviting for a cozy break.
**TIP TRIFTSTEIG:**
Here at the Annerlsteg, you can start the **[TRIFTSTEIG](https://www.kalkalpen.at/touren#area=*&filter=r-fullyTranslatedLangus-,r-openState-,sb-sortedBy-0&ipd=25471446&q=triftsteig&zc=11.,14.28017,47.79009)**. This approximately 2-kilometer-long gorge via ferrata secured with steel cables follows the old path of the former Triftsteig, which was equipped only with narrow wooden planks. From here, the bold timber workers drove logs through the gorges during high water down to Reichraming and further to the Enns river.
The narrow, partly exposed trail requires sure-footedness and a head for heights. **Recommended only for experienced hikers!** Return to the starting point at the Annerlsteg by forest road and through several long tunnels (a flashlight or headlamp is helpful).
Our bike path now leads us through several longer tunnels of the former Waldbahn. At kilometer 20, you will reach the Schleierfall (waterfall), where the Hochlachtbach drops to the Schwarzen Bach. We continue cycling between Hörndlmauer and Preflingkogel along the Schwarzen Bach to Weißwasser.
- Note system error: The steep parts between kilometers 18 and 21 do not actually exist; the route is flat through tunnels of the former Waldbahnstraße. (Total distance 46 kilometers, elevation gain approx. 522 meters)
**TIP VIRTUAL WEISSWASSER EXPERIENCE TRAIL:**
It is hardly imaginable that once around 1,000 people lived here in Weißwasser, who even had their own school and shop. This was a larger settlement for workers for the bauxite mining in the Blaberg, Prefing, and Schwarza areas.
A new **[VIRTUAL WEISSWASSER EXPERIENCE TRAIL](https://www.kalkalpen.at/touren#cat=Erlebniswege&dmdtab=oax-tab1&filter=r-fullyTranslatedLangus-,r-openState-,sb-sortedBy-0&ipd=807592865&ov=hiking&zc=13.,14.51936,47.73944)** now accompanies a short section of the Hintergebirgsradweg: Using augmented reality, the historically significant mining settlement from the 1960s in Weißwasser is virtually visible and experienceable again. **The app for the trail is available free of charge but must be downloaded to your smartphone before starting the cycling tour.** (No mobile reception or internet connection in Weißwasser)
From Weißwasser, a bit of stamina is required. You have to overcome 200 meters of elevation on nearly 5 kilometers to **Hirschkogel saddle**. Once at the top, take the opportunity to rest.
**TIP!** From here, a detour to the managed [**ANLAUFALM**](http://www.outdooractive.com/r/10240831/) is recommended, about 30 minutes on foot via the hiking trail to the alpine pasture or a good 5 kilometers by bike around Sonnberg. The Anlaufalm is managed from May 1 to the end of October.
From Hirschkogel saddle, it’s then a long downhill ride to the small village of **Brunnbach**. First, you will see the [**BRUNNBACHSTADL SNACK STATION**](https://www.kalkalpen.at/ausflugsziele#area=*&filter=r-fullyTranslatedLangus-,r-openState-,sb-sortedBy-0&ipd=22561539&q=brunnbach&zc=11.,14.28051,47.79009), here you turn left and continue along the **Plaißabach**, gently descending until you return to the **Maieralm**. Here the circular route closes and you cycle back along the familiar path to the Anzenbach parking lot and further to Reichraming.
**Tip:**
- Please don't forget to save the route "offline" before you set off, as mobile reception in the forest wilderness of the national park is not always available.
- **WORTH SEEING!** The [**Virtual Weißwasser Experience Trail**](https://www.kalkalpen.at/erlebniswege#cat=Erlebniswege&dmdtab=oax-tab1&filter=r-fullyTranslatedLangus-,r-openState-,sb-sortedBy-0&ipd=807592865&zc=11.,14.28017,47.79009) is located directly on the Hintergebirgsradweg between the junction to the Weißwasser bivouac site and the junction to the Hirschkogel saddle. **Safety guidelines:**
Please note: Cycling and mountain biking in the national park area is only permitted from April 15 to October 31, from 2 hours after sunrise until 1 hour before sunset! The exception is the Langfirst mountain bike trail, where the bike season begins only on June 1. Cycling and mountain biking are only permitted on marked routes. Some bike paths are simultaneously designated as hiking trails or riding trails. Always expect oncoming hikers or riders!

**\*\*** Auf Grund der anhaltenden Trockenheit ist im Bezirk Steyr-Land am 30. April 2026 eine **[Waldbrandschutz-Verordnung in Kraft getreten](https://www.land-oberoesterreich.gv.at/Mediendateien/Formulare/Dokumente_BH_SE/Waldbrandschutz-Verordnung%202026%20-%20AMTSBLATT%20STEYR-LAND_Bezir.pdf)**. Das heißt, in Waldgebieten sowie in deren Gefährdungsbereichen ist jedes Anzünden von Feuer und das Rauchen verboten. Gefährdungsbereich ist überall dort gegeben, wo die Bodendecke oder die Windverhältnisse das Übergreifen eines Bodenfeuers oder eines Feuers durch Funkenflug in den benachbarten Wald begünstigen. Übertretungen dieser Verordnung können mit Geldstrafe bis zu 7.270 € oder mit Freiheitsstrafe geahndet werden. Waldbrandschutz-Verordnung tritt erst mit Ablauf des 31. Oktober 2026 außer Kraft.

Ende Triftsteig
Ende des Triftsteig im Hintergebirge
Der Triftsteig beginnt twa 100m nach dem "Schleierfall" (unmittelbar bei der nächsten Brücke zum Tunnel) bei der Brücke. Man durchquert auf- und absteigend am rechten Bachufer etwa 2 km die wildromantische Schlucht bis zum Zusammentreffen mit der Forststraße bei der sogenannten "Annerlsteg" Brücke. Der Steig ist durchwegs sehr gut abgesichert. Man durchquert ihn stellenweise recht ausgesetzt und immer knapp über der Wasseroberfläche des "Großen Baches". Zwischendurch immer wieder Gehgelände auf schmalem Steig, der an manchen Stellen durch querführende, kleine Wasserläufe Nässe aufweisen kann. Der Triftsteig ist in beide Richtungen begehbar.

Große Klause
Große Klause, ehemalige Triftanlage
Die Große Klause ist die älteste Klause im Reichraminger Hintergebirge. Für die Holztriftstrecke von 11,6 Kilometer bis zum Schallauer Rechen in Reichraming brauchte das Schwemmholz von hier aus eine Stunde. 1937 wurde das letzte mal getriftet.
Von der [Kleinen Klaushütte](https://www.kalkalpen.at/ausflugsziele#area=*&filter=r-fullyTranslatedLangus-,r-openState-,sb-sortedBy-0&ipd=809188808&q=kleine%20klaush%C3%BCtte&zc=11.,14.28017,47.79009) aus, kann man in den Felsdurchbruch einsehen.
Große Schlucht, Reichraminger Hintergebirge
Der Große Bach hat sich über Jahrtausende tief ins Gestein eingeschnitten und eine beeindruckende Schlucht geschaffen. Zwischen Schleierfall und Annerlsteg befindet sich der engste und interessanteste Teil der Schlucht.
Durch die Große Schlucht hindurch führt der Trifsteig. Dieser wurde ursprünglich für die Holztrift am Großen Bach angelegt. Teilweise folgt der Klettersteig dem alten Verlauf des damals nur mit schmalen Holzstegen ausgestatteten Triftsteiges - man kann die gefährliche Arbeit der ehemaligen Holzflößer erahnen.
Jausenstation Brunnbachstadl
Der Brunnbachstadl liegt in der kleinen ruhigen Ortschaft Brunnbach. Die gemütliche Jausenstation ist an Wochenenden und Feiertagen von Mai bis Mitte November geöffnet.
Brunnbachstadl – DER Treffpunkt im Reichraminger Hintergebirge, hier treffen sich herzhafte kulinarische Köstlichkeiten und unglaublich schönes Ambiente! Ein Erlebnis für alle Sinne! Ob eine gemütliche Einkehr nach einer Radtour oder Wanderung oder das Feiern von Festen - bei uns wird alles zu einem ganz besonderen Erlebnis!
Klaushütte
Versorgungstation für Radfahrer und Wanderer am [Hintergebirgsradweg](https://www.outdooractive.com/r/10382984/) und Etappe 2 am [Buchensteig](https://www.outdooractive.com/r/10170274/).
E-Bike aufladen: Auf Anfrage während der Hüttenöffnungszeiten über Steckdose möglich. Zur Betankung von E-Bikes eigenes Ladekabel mitnehmen.
Die urige Holzknechthütte wurde 1758 erbaut und diente den Forstarbeitern als Unterkunft. Die Stämme der Blockhütte sind noch zugehackt und nicht gesägt. Die Säge wurde erst im Jahr 1777 verpflichtend eingeführt, bis dahin wurden die Bäume mit der Axt gefällt und bearbeitet. Die ÖBF-Versorgungsstation ist ein beliebtes Ausflugsziel am Hintergebirgs-Radweg.

Kommt man mit dem Rad aus Richtung Reichraming/Anzenbachschranken, kann man bei dieser Abzweigung zur Klaushütte leicht vorbeiradeln - denn geradeaus führt die Straße weiter in den Brunnbach - wärend es rechts über die Brücke über den Bach zur bewirtschafteten Klaushütte - Annersteg - Weißwasser - Anlaufalm weitergeht.

Luchs Denkmal
Am 13. Dezember 2011 wurde das aus der Schweiz stammende Luchsmännchen "Juro" genau hier im Hintergebirge ausgesetzt.
Am 13. Dezember 2011 wurde das aus der Schweiz stammende Luchsmännchen Juro im genau hier im Hintergebirge ausgesetzt. Nur wenige Monate zuvor war die Luchsin Freia, ebenfalls aus der Schweiz, in den Nationalpark Kalkalpen umgesiedelt worden. Die streng geschützten Luchse, beide im fortpflanzungsfähigen Alter, sollten für Nachwuchs sorgen, das hofften die Mitglieder des Arbeitskreises Luchs Oberösterreichische Kalkalpen. Leider kam alles ganz anders und beide Tiere wurden von einem Jägerehepaar in einem angrenzenden Jagdrevier, im Gemeindegebiet von Weyer, getötet.
Wild gehört in gewisser Weise allen, genau wie Sonne und Regen. Wer Wildtiere nicht erlegen will, will sie doch zumindest bestaunen. Wildtiere in freier Natur zu beobachten gehört für viele Menschen zu den schönsten Erlebnissen. Auch kommende Generationen sollen sich an einer bunten und artenreichen Natur erfreuen können. Überraschende Wildtierbegegnungen sind beglückend und sollen Menschen auch außerhalb von Nationalparks möglich sein. Sie haben einen großen ideellen Wert. Die ÖAMTC SelfService-Station im Brunnbach schafft Abhilfe bei einer Fahrrad-Panne.
Die 1,4 Meter hohe Service-Station, ist mit einer Aufhängevorrichtung für Fahrräder, einer Luftpumpe sowie Handwerkzeugen wie Schraubenzieher, Inbus- und Schraubenschlüssel etc. ausgestattet. Hier können kleinere Gebrechen am Fahrrad bequem und kostenlos selbst behoben werden.

Virtuelle Zeitreise durch das Dorf der 1000 Bergarbeiter
Hier im Umkreis stand einst die Bergarbeitersiedlung Weißwasser. In mühevoller Arbeit holten Menschen Eisenerz, Gagat, Kohle und vor allem Bauxit aus der Erde.
Infotafel zum AR-Erlebnisweg: Der Museumsverein Knappenhaus Unterlassa initierte im Reichraminger Hintergebirge den Erlebnisweg "Virtuelles Weißwasser". Mittels Augmented Reality wird auf eine Weglänge von rund 800 Meter entlang des Hintergebirgsradweges am Display Ihres Handys die historische Bergbausiedlung wieder sichtbar. Neben Bergbaueinrichtungen, wie z.B. der mit 13,5 km längsten Materialseilbahn Europas, standen HIER in Weißwasser Häuser und Baracken wo Bergarbeiter mit ihren Familien wohnten.
Waldbahn-Garnitur
Bereits 1912 wurde im Weißenbachtal eine einfache Rollbahn zum Holztransport errichtet. Über diese Strecke ist wenig überliefert, außer, dass der Betrieb ohne Maschinenkraft erfolgte. Der Anstoß zum Bau der Hauptstrecke der Waldbahn kam 1916, als im Brunnbach- und Weißwassergebiet vom Wind 70.000 fm Fichten geworfen wurden. Das meiste Holz blieb, durch den Arbeitermangel im Krieg bedingt, liegen, und so kam es 1919 zu einer Borkenkäferkatastrophe, durch die bis 1922 eine Million Festmeter Holz vernichtet wurde. Von 1919 bis 1923 wurde von der Schallau – dem alten Lager- und Ländeplatz in Reichraming – bis Brunnbach durch das am meisten betroffene Gebiet entlang des Pleissabaches eine einsgesamt 22 km lange Waldbahn gebaut. Abzweigungen ins Weißenbachtal und Richtung Bäckerlager dienten als Zubringer bzw. Verlängerung der Hauptlinie. Mehr über die [Waldbahn hier nachlesen!](http://www.kalkalpen.at/de/Waldbahn)

Die Weißenbach Kapelle ist eine der wenigen Überreste der verschwundenen Siedlungen im Reichraminger Hintergebirge. Die 1999 renovierte Kapelle wurde 1828 erbaut und war an Sonn- und Feiertagen Mittelpunkt des dörflichen Lebens.

2.Some of the tours lead over roads with normal traffic conditions. Please observe that there is an increased risk which can be avoided by means of appropriate attention and proper estimation and implementation of one’s own abilities. For this reason, please travel a route that is unfamiliar to you slowly and with special care. Pay constant attention to potential dangers and always observe traffic. Do not leave the routes featured in descriptions.
The potential use of private roads, in particular forestry roads and agricultural transport roads, can be subject to legal restrictions, which must be observed and adhered to.
The normal traffic rules apply. Each user (e.g. biker, motorbiker) is responsible for adhering to these rules and maintaining his/her bike/vehicle and its equipment (lights, brakes etc.) in good working order. Each user is also responsible for ensuring that he/she rides at a velocity that is appropriate for the conditions and his/her skill level and for maintaining sufficient distance to the rider in front. We explicitly recommend adjusting velocity to correspond to the respective field of vision, wearing a helmet, using reflective clothing (or similar) and employing bicycle lights in line with regulations.
3.Each tour requires good physical fitness as well as detailed planning. We explicitly recommend only taking the tours in the case of optimal healthiness.
We recommend that you conclude an accident and liability insurance policy. Use an onboard computer that displays the respective kilometres travelled per day and is calibrated for the front wheel.
4.Special for mountain bikers – Fair-play rules:
Mountain biking is one of the most wonderful outdoor leisure-time activities. Whilst biking or on a mountain biking tour, mountains and lakes, meadows and cabins are re-discovered in new ways. A couple of rules for fair play in the forest help to avoid conflicts whilst mountain biking.
a.Pedestrians have the right of way: We are accommodating and friendly to pedestrians and hikers. Upon encountering these fellow travellers, we alert them by using the bicycle bell and slowly overtake them. We avoid paths with heavy pedestrian traffic altogether. Take nature into account: We do not leave refuse behind.
b.The braking distance should be half of the total distance visible: We ride at a controlled pace, are ready to brake and maintain a braking distance half as long as the total distance visible, especially in curves, because we always have to count on obstacles on the path. Damage to the path, stones, branches, wood piles, grazing livestock, cattle grids, barriers, tractor-type forestry machines and authorised vehicles pose dangers that we need to be ready for.
c.Don’t drink and drive!: Do not drink alcohol when mountain biking. Take care at stop-off points (dealing with bike racks, dirty shoes or clothing).
It is obligatory to provide first aid!
d.Marked routes, closed paths and blockades: Keep to the marked routes, observe the blockades and accept that these roads are primarily for agricultural and forestry use!
Blockades can often not be avoided and are in your own interest. Biking beyond the intended path and outside of opening times is punishable and turns us into illegal bikers.
e.We are guests in the forest and behave accordingly, including vis-à-vis forestry and hunting staff. Whilst mountain biking, mobile telephones and music players are forbidden! Biking requires your full attention.
f.Avoid unnecessary noise. Out of consideration to the animals living in the wild, we only bike during full daylight. As a principle, we always wear our helmet (even when riding uphill)! Don’t forget emergency supplies: We always have a repair set and bandages along.
g.Don’t overestimate your skills: We should not overdo it when it comes to biking technique and physical fitness. Take the level of difficulty posed by the route into consideration and make a precise estimate of your experience and skills as a biker (braking, bell, lights)!
h.Close gates: We approach grazing livestock at a walking pace and close every gate behind us. We should avoid causing escape and panic reactions in the animals. Nothing stands in the way of the fun and athletic challenge in the mountains and forests!
i.Traffic rules: The general traffic rules (StVO) apply for all the mountain biking routes and we adhere to them. Our bike therefore needs to be in perfect technical condition and equipped in line with the traffic rules, including brakes, a bell and lights. We inspect and service our mountain bikes regularly anyway.
