The romantic town of Steyr, idyllically situated at the confluence of the Enns and Steyr rivers, is a true architectural jewel and an endearing small town between Salzburg and Vienna. The historic town square is lined with harmonious town houses from different stylistic periods, with the Gothic Bummerlhaus and the mighty Lamberg Castle in the centre. The historic architecture forms the backdrop for the town's lively cultural life, the highlight being the Steyr Music Festival with open-air productions in the castle moat. The idyllic river valleys of the Enns, Steyr and Krems are the lifelines of the region. The centrepiece is the Kalkalpen National Park with its unique forest wilderness and the UNESCO-listed ‘Natural Heritage Beech Forest’, best experienced on guided National Park Ranger tours. The region offers an excellent network of cycle and mountain bike routes as well as 100 km of signposted hiking trails and is an insider tip for climbers.
