Initially, the company operated under the name Zum roten Turm. The Soviets had confiscated over 300 former German businesses with 60,000 employees and continued to run them under their own administration. The KPÖ thus had financial resources amounting to multiple millions. The concealed ownership structure of Turmöl became public in 1980. In 1979, the KPÖ wanted to sell Turmöl, whose value was stated to be 70 million marks (equivalent to 77 million euros in today’s purchasing power). At that time, the company covered 80 percent of the private heating oil needs in Austria and had a network of 50 gas stations. However, the strawman Martin Maimann refused (despite a severance payment of 3 million marks) to agree to the transaction and declared that the company belonged to him and his payments to the KPÖ had always been voluntary. Due to the high value, the KPÖ abandoned its cover strategy and took the matter to court. In 2003, Turmöl, along with all existing gas station locations, was taken over by the Doppler group and positioned as a discount gas station. In 2007, a complete brand relaunch took place. The key visual of the then-design was a talking fuel pump in various versions. Starting in 2009, a cooperation began with the Austrian trading company Spar. Under the SPAR express brand, numerous supermarkets have since been located at Turmöl gas stations. The collaboration was intensified at the end of 2010 and also extended to other Doppler gas stations. With the introduction of the supermarket price guarantee at SPAR express, it became possible to conveniently fulfill daily grocery needs directly at the gas station at a low cost. In 2011, another revision of the brand appearance was carried out. With a revision of the logo and the addition “Tankbare Preise,” the price-aggressive claim of Turmöl was further strengthened. Additionally, numerous Turmöl gas stations were converted to unmanned fuel dispensing stations under the brand Turmöl Quick.
