History of Losenstein
---------------------

The history of Losenstein is closely linked to **Losenstein Castle**, which was built by the Otakars around **1150** . After the Babenbergs died out in 1246, there was unrest and plundering in the region. In 1252, Ottokar II installed the ministerial Dietmar von Steyr as Lord of Losenstein, whose descendants expanded the castle and henceforth called themselves "von Losenstein". This marked the beginning of the rise of a dynasty that characterised the Enns Valley for centuries.

At the beginning of the 15th century, the family relocated to a new **moated castle in Losensteinleithen**, causing the old fortress to lose its importance and gradually fall into disrepair. After the Losensteins died out in **1692**, the property passed to the **Auersperg** family before the province of Upper Austria acquired the ruins **in 1905**. Today, it is considered one of the largest and oldest castle ruins in the country and characterises the townscape far into the valley.

However, Losenstein was not only a fortress and seat of nobility. A lively **ironworking** industry developed along the River **Enns**, with **nailsmithing** in particular making the town famous. For generations, nails were carefully crafted here by hand - a trade that combined knowledge, precision and pride. The **Nagelschmiedweg** and the historic **Brandstätter Hammer** are reminders of this time.

**The River Enns** itself was both a lifeline and a trade route. As an important traffic and transport route, it connected the Enns Valley with other regions of Upper Austria; iron and goods were transported on the river and promoted economic exchange. This gave rise to a place whose history tells of a castle, crafts and the river - and which to this day combines natural power, culture and joie de vivre in a small space in the heart of Upper Austria.

Die Burgruine Losenstein liegt im Ort **Losenstein im oberösterreichischen Ennstal** und ist bequem mit **Auto, Bahn oder Bus** erreichbar und frei zugängnlich. Vom Ortszentrum bzw. von den beschilderten Parkplätzen in der Burgstraße führt ein kurzer, gut begehbarer Fußweg in etwa **5–10 Minuten** hinauf zur Ruine.
