Facts & Figures ------------------- 3,883 Inhabitants 43 km² Area 355 m above sea level 47.97, 14.26 GPS coordinates History of Grünburg ------------------- Located in the centre of the idyllic Steyrtal valley, Grünburg looks back on a long history. As early as the Middle Ages, the town developed into an important **centre for trade and industry** thanks to its favourable location. **Iron processing** in particular characterised the region for many centuries and contributed significantly to its economic development. The municipality owes its **name** to a **castle** that once stood on what is now the church hill in Obergrünburg. Where the castle once stood guard over the Steyrtal valley, the parish church of St George rises today. It was built from the former castle chapel and is still a reminder of the medieval origins of the village. The 19th century brought an important step in development: the first section of the **Steyrtal railway** between Garsten and Grünburg was opened in 1889. The oldest steam-powered 760 mm narrow-gauge railway in Austria connected the Steyrtal with the industrial city of Steyr and had a lasting impact on the economy and everyday life of the region. Today, the line operated as a museum railway and the Schmiedleithen open-air museum are reminders of Grünburg's eventful history - between medieval rule, Eisenwurzen tradition and the power of the Steyr, which still shapes the valley today.
