Facts & Figures ------------------- 3,281 Inhabitants 20.6 km² Area 310 m above sea level 48.09, 14.42 GPS coordinates History of the municipality of Dietach -------------------------------------- **Dietach** can look back on over 1,200 years of history - characterised by change, stability and a strong sense of community. The village was first mentioned in a document in **777** as "Todicha" in the foundation charter of Duke Tassilo III of Bavaria on the occasion of the foundation of Kremsmünster Abbey. The name is derived from the Germanic personal name "Todo" and the Old High German "aha" for river - a reference to the close connection between the settlement and the landscape. Over the centuries, this developed into names such as "Twedick" (1088) and "Dudich" (1170) before the current name Dietach prevailed. Originally part of the Duchy of Bavaria, the area became part of the Duchy of Austria in the 12th century. From 1490 it belonged to the principality, later crown land of Austria ob der Enns - today's Upper Austria. Dietach has also experienced turbulent times: During the Napoleonic Wars, the region was occupied by troops on several occasions. Dietach has been part of the federal state of Upper Austria since 1918. A significant turning point came in the 20th century. Dietach was part of the municipality of Gleink until 1938. After territorial changes and several administrative reorganisations, Unterdietach, Mitterdietach and Oberdietach were initially assigned to other municipalities. On **1 January 1946**, Dietach finally became an independent political municipality again - a milestone for local identity and self-government. The post-war period brought growth and development. A settlement characterised by agriculture gradually became a modern residential community in the Steyr-Land district. The population rose from 2,113 in 1991 to around 3,460. With its proximity to the town of Steyr, a good infrastructure and an active community life, Dietach developed into a lively place to live. Today, Dietach combines its long history with a clear view of the future.
