Artfully carved masks and impressive figures with heavy furs and bells parade through the villages. A special highlight is the **historic Niglo parade in Windischgarsten** on 5 December - a 150-year-old tradition and intangible cultural heritage as defined by UNESCO. The custom was first mentioned **as early as 1860** and takes place every year on **5 December** at around 5.30 pm through the village, which is transformed into a living stage. Over 30 figures appear in **historical masks** and costumes - including Nigloherr, Niglofrau, Klaubauf, Trud, Habergoaß, Leutzammfresser, Engerl and other traditional figures. However, the focus is not on the scary, but on the good: St Nicholas, who brings light and peace. Since **2012**, the Niglo parade has been part of Austria's intangible **UNESCO cultural heritage** and is one of the most impressive living traditions in the 360° Alpine region.
