Customs, Christmas markets & quiet moments
----------------------------------------------

### Glittering lights, crafts and anticipation in the heart of Upper Austria

Between historic town squares and Alpine traditions: 360° Alpenland is home to many of the most atmospheric Advent markets in Upper Austria: whether in the Christkindlstadt Steyr, Kirchdorf an der Krems and Bad Hall or at the Pyhrn-Priel Bergadvent in the south of the region.

Arts and crafts, regional specialities, the Steyr nativity scene and living UNESCO cultural heritage make Advent here particularly authentic. Short distances combine old town flair, spa park atmosphere and wintry mountain scenery to create a harmonious experience.

Steyr has borne the name **Christkindlstadt** for 40 years and becomes the atmospheric centre of Christmas events during Advent. Around the town square, the Advent village, Christmas market in the Promenadenallee and arts and crafts in Lamberg Castle invite you to stroll around. Many places are easily accessible on foot, supplemented by the vintage bus and Steyrtal museum railway to the Advent calendar village of Steinbach an der Steyr.

### Mountain Advent between Pyhrn and Priel

Further south, the **Pyhrn-Priel Mountain Advent** lights up the Advent weekends in the villages of the region. Between snow-covered peaks, traditions that have been passed down for generations come to life. An annual fixture is the musical Advent in the Stiftshof in Spital am Pyhrn or the Niglo parade in Windischgarsten.

### Bad Hall & Kirchdorf an der Krems

When everyday life becomes quieter, Bad Hall offers space to pause for a moment. After a soothing day at the spa, take a walk through the spa gardens to the Advent market or the forest nativity scene. Charming Advent markets with arts and crafts, music, flea markets and Krampus games are also held in the neighbouring villages and around Kirchdorf an der Krems.

Frequently asked questions about the Advent markets in 360° Alpenland:
----------------------------------------------------------------------

[ Which Advent markets are there in the 360° Alpine Region? ](#ttgNCECollapse459643)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Across the 360° Alpine Region, the Advent markets stretch from Steyr’s Old Town and the Promenadenallee, via Bad Hall (Visitor Centre) and the Enns Valley (Reichraming and Weyer), the Steyr and Kremstal valleys (Kirchdorf / Krems) right through to the villages between Pyhrn and Priel. Historic squares, courtyards and small village centres become the setting for arts and crafts, regional specialities and musical performances. Each market bears the distinctive character of its location – ranging from urban in style to deeply rooted in the Alpine tradition. In Steinbach/Steyr, the windows on the village square are transformed into a giant Advent calendar, providing the backdrop for the Steinbach Advent (on the second and third weekends of Advent).

[ When do the Advent markets take place in the region? ](#ttgNCECollapse459644)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Most Advent markets in the Alpine region open at the official start of the Advent season (late November) and run throughout the entire Advent period until just before Christmas. Many of the markets are open at weekends. The Advent village on Steyr’s Stadtplatz is also open during the week, from 13 November onwards.

[ What makes Advent in Steyr so special? ](#ttgNCECollapse459646)
--------------------------------------------------------------------

Steyr is one of the most atmospheric Advent destinations in Upper Austria. On the historic town square, where town houses from various eras stand side by side, an atmosphere emerges that blends architecture and tradition. The scent of punch hangs in the air, choirs sing between the town hall and the churches – and the River Enns reflects the light from the stalls. The Christkindl pilgrimage site, with its church and Christmas post office, is the starting point for Steyr’s Advent celebrations: Steyr nativity scenes, the Christmas Museum and pre-Christmas guided tours round off the programme.

[ Are there any smaller, regional Advent markets as well? ](#ttgNCECollapse459647)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As well as the larger markets around Steyr and Garsten, numerous smaller Advent events take place across the 360° Alpenland region – in parish halls, on farms or in abbey courtyards. Here, the focus is on regional producers, craftspeople and local associations. Conversations arise naturally; much of what’s on offer is handmade, and some traditions have been upheld for generations.

 [ Are the Advent markets family-friendly? ](#ttgNCECollapse459648)
---------------------------------------------------------------------

Many Advent markets offer activities for children – from visits from St Nicholas to small craft workshops. In Steyr, the ‘Steyrer Kripperl’ nativity play brings to life humorous scenes from days gone by. The compact squares and clearly laid-out markets make for a relaxed visit, even with children. In Steyr, a visit to the Christmas Museum with its interactive train ride is a must for children (even if the queue is often up to two hours long).

[ What musical traditions characterise Advent? ](#ttgNCECollapse459649)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Brass bands, church choirs and traditional folk music are an integral part of the Advent markets in Upper Austria. Many performances take place without a large stage – right in the middle of the square, amongst the people. Here, music is not simply consumed, but shared by everyone.

[ Are there any special events during Advent? ](#ttgNCECollapse459650)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Night watchman tours in Steyr, the Nigloumzug procession in Windischgarsten, as well as concerts in churches and traditional events in the south of the region complement the markets. They offer insights into history and living traditions – from ancient crafts to regional rituals. Not to be forgotten are the Perchten – who take to the streets during parades in Reichraming, Steinbach/Steyr and Steyr.
